“I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate himself by conscious endeavor.”

—Henry David Thoreau, Walden

“Time is a gift, given to you, given to give you the time you need, the time you need to have the time of your life.”

—Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth

We live in such a fast paced world—it’s all about getting from A to B in the most efficient manner. Society has conditioned us so, and before we know it, everything in between becomes a spurious blur. Once in a while, I amble aimlessly through the streets and become conscious of the metropolitan milieu I strive in. Camera in hand, I’m able to capture the little things that grow profound when seen through a lens.

“…the most important reason for going from one place to another is to see what’s in between, and they took great pleasure in doing just that.”

—Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth

As children, we are compelled to place our utmost...

Innocence Lost

As children, we are compelled to place our utmost faith in the impossible, hoping that, with the aid of our juvenile imaginations, we can one day refute the absurdities we now presume unattainable. I want to be a firefighter, an international spy, an astronaut. Those naive thoughts are in the distant past—dreams trodden into the increasingly malignant road of life. When, along this path, did we decide to dispose of our innocent optimism, the confidence we so proudly proclaimed? Perhaps it was when the realities bludgeoned us in the face so profoundly that we revoked all hopes and ambitions. That the veil between purity and savagery had been lifted is what paralyzed us so, stripping us of the false fortifications that have deluded our childhoods. Let us neglect our sensible skepticism for a moment to step into the realm of possibilities, of invulnerability. Maybe, just maybe, those previous absurdities aren’t so preposterous anymore. Maybe, with some effort, we can one day fight flames, gather intelligence, and float among the stars.

Fate
Seeing that this photo involves peering into the heavens,...

Fate

Seeing that this photo involves peering into the heavens, perhaps a related quote is appropriate:

“These things do not come to pass without the will of Heaven.”

—Virgil, Aeneid

Also, in the original Latin: “Non haec sine numine divum eveniunt.” However, how valid is this statement? I think that we are in no position to judge its rationale, but it is nonetheless thought-provoking. For some, it is an established belief that the route has been mapped, the roads paved—that the path to providence is immutable. A contrario, there are others who see virgin fields and hills yet to be touched. They view themselves as autonomous steam rollers, able to pave their paths to their liking. Ultimately, though, whether we are pavers or travelers, we’ll never know.

Rider

...

Rider

I came across a provocative quote while reading today:

“Tell me,” a rabbi asked Daniel Bell when he said, as a child, that he did not believe in God. “Do you think God cares?”

—Joan Didion, On Morality

Obviously, the aforementioned quote is impertinent to today’s photo (although one could possibly distort the image to fit any arbitrary definition), but it does stimulate the almost nonexistent theological part of my mind. Understandably, religion serves as guide in life, but need it cause so much destruction?

Stories

We’re all creators—gods of stories. Constantly, we strive to feel accomplished at life, to feel satisfied with our own stories. Yet we’re all mere specks—floating microcosms in a sea saturated with universes. Often, our worlds interact with brevity so insignificant that we dismiss each other almost entirely. Why don’t we appreciate the lives of others, lives that they have worked so hard to create? We all have stories. What’s yours?

Beginnings

It’s moments like these when the future seems uncertain that I feel the most anxiety. I have started a microblog to complement my Flickr stream, and frankly, I have the least idea how this will go. However, in this society of which social networking is an integral aspect of, I am willing to give this a chance. Like in photography, we’re all taking chances to experiment with the unknown, ultimately hoping for an auspicious eventuality—hoping that our efforts have paid off in the form of a meaningful image. So here I am embracing the obscure future. Hopefully, this will go well :)
